the politics of ignoring politics

Every time I open my phone, Trump is on the screen doing or saying something exhausting. I’m a never-Trumper, I always have been, but I am just so burnt out on the anger. I don’t have the energy to hate him, I just really, really don’t want him to be president. My activism usually comes so naturally, but right now I feel like I’m running on empty. So I turned off all my news alerts today. Just shut them down completely. I took the bus down to the East Village to look for some 1930s pieces at this antique place I like, but everything was either wildly overpriced or practically disintegrating. I ended up buying a black 60s mod skirt instead because it was cheap and it fits my daily uniform. The whole trip was just a giant distraction so I wouldn’t have to think about the state of the world. It worked, mostly. Sometimes self-care is just buying old clothes and refusing to perceive the government.
